Each year the Municipal budget reserves financial means amounting up to 100 thousand PLN for the rennovation programme concerning the historical chapels from the Wieliczka area.
Successively, the objects which are recognized as highly valuable from the historical point of view while being found in an especially bad technical condition are subject to rennovation works.Lately the Figure of Christ on a column situated in the area of the Council Kindergarten no2 in Wieliczka has been dismantled. The figure left without professional assistance and restorative care was repainted many a time and the losses were fixed using gypsum and cement mortar which clearly degraded the structure of the stone.
During dismantling of the chapel it transpired that it was fixed directly on the ground, with no foundation, which made it very unstable. After the chapel has been brought down to elementary parts it was transported to a restoration workshop. The samples of surface layers of the sculpture shall be subject to laboratory examination in order to establish the original colouring.Subsequently the surface of the stone shall be delicately cleaned of long-term deposit and then fortified and replenished. If the results of the laboratory analyses shall prove that originally the figure was polychromed, then the renovators shall reconstruct the colour coat.If not, it shall be integrated from the colour point of view.
In autumn this year the chapel shall be returned to its oroginal location, but this time it shall be located anew on the newly prepared and insulated foundation.
Also this week, if the weather is fine, restoration works concerning stone pillar Holy Mother chapel in Czarnochowice shall commence.
The rennovation is supposed to end around the end of October this year.
The conservation works pertaining to both the chaples are supervised by Ms Natalia Soran - Maluty.
