On the day of the 90th anniversary of regaining independence by Poland “The Oak dedicated to the memory of the Patriots of Wieliczka Murdered in Katyń” has been planted in the Wieliczka Planty Gardens.
The act of planting the tree was performed by:on behalf of the Katyń Families Society - Krystyna Dąbrowska – the daughter of the army reserve lieutenant Zygmunt Zbroja, along with Wieliczka’s Mayor Artur Kozioł, Wieliczka’s foreman Jacek Juszkiewicz, chairman of the “Wieliczka” Salt Mine, Zbigniew Zarębski and Jadwiga Duda, chairman of the The Friends of Wieliczka Club Society.
The action is an answer to the request of the Katyń Families Society, on behalf of which the Friends of Wieliczka Club addressed the mayor of Wieliczka, concerning planting of the “Oaks of Memory” in order to commemorate the Wieliczka residents murdered in Katyń in the year 1940 as well as in the other execution centres in the area of the USSR between the years 1939-1956.
The oak planted on Tuesday is the one, common, symbolic tree for all the victims of the Soviet crimes who were the residents of Wieliczka.
The successive plans anticipate planting the individual “Oaks of Memory” until the year 2010 in the Mickiewicz Park, according to the suggestions of the idea’s authors.
The oak already growing in the Wieliczka Planty Gardens reminds of the commenced action “Katyń….to save from oblivion”.
